If you’ve never had microblading before, you may be wondering what actually happens during the appointment.

How is the shape chosen? How do you know what color your brows will be? How long does the appointment take? And what will your brows look like when you leave?

At Baltimore Beauties in Lutherville, Maryland, a microblading appointment is much more than simply creating hair strokes. The process involves consultation, brow design, skin evaluation, pigment selection, microblading, and detailed aftercare instructions.

Here’s what you can expect.

Step 1: We Evaluate Your Brows and Skin

Before any permanent makeup is performed, your skin and existing brows need to be evaluated.

We’ll look at:

  • Your natural brow shape
  • Existing brow hair
  • Skin type
  • Skin texture
  • Oil production
  • Previous permanent makeup
  • Facial features
  • Your desired result

This evaluation is important because microblading isn’t the right technique for everyone.

If your skin isn’t likely to retain fine hairstrokes well, another technique such as powder brows may be recommended.

The goal isn’t simply to give you the service you requested.

The goal is to choose the technique that is appropriate for your skin.

Step 2: We Discuss Your Brow Goals

We’ll talk about what you like and don’t like about your current brows.

You may want:

  • Fuller-looking brows
  • More definition
  • A more balanced shape
  • Help filling in sparse areas
  • A more defined arch
  • A natural-looking brow enhancement

You can also bring inspiration photos.

However, keep in mind that your brows will be customized to your face and your natural anatomy rather than copied directly from someone else’s photo.

Step 3: We Map and Design Your Brows

One of the most important parts of the appointment is creating the brow shape.

Your brows are mapped and designed based on your facial features and natural brow structure.

The goal is to create symmetry while still maintaining a natural appearance.

We’ll review the shape with you before any pigment is implanted.

Nothing is tattooed until you’re comfortable with the proposed shape.

Step 4: We Choose Your Pigment Color

Your pigment is customized to your natural coloring.

We consider factors such as:

  • Hair color
  • Natural brow color
  • Skin tone
  • Skin undertones
  • Existing brow pigment
  • Desired healed result

The color you see immediately after the procedure will not necessarily be the color you see once your brows are fully healed.

Fresh pigment is stronger, and some pigment will naturally soften during healing.

Step 5: The Microblading Begins

Once the shape and color have been determined, the microblading procedure begins.

Microblading uses a specialized manual tool to create very fine, hair-like strokes in the skin.

These strokes are strategically placed to mimic the appearance of natural brow hairs.

The goal is to create a realistic pattern that works with your existing brow hair rather than simply drawing lines across the skin.

Step 6: Your Brows Are Built Gradually

Microblading is not about rushing through the procedure.

The brows are built carefully and intentionally.

Your artist evaluates the shape and density as the procedure progresses, making adjustments as needed to create a balanced result.

The goal is quality and appropriate pigment placement—not simply getting as much pigment into the skin as possible.

Step 7: We Review Your Fresh Brows

Once the procedure is complete, you’ll be able to see your new brows.

Remember that fresh microblading typically looks:

  • Darker
  • More defined
  • More saturated

than the final healed result.

Your skin has just been treated, so some redness or sensitivity may also be present.

Don’t judge the final result based on what you see immediately after your appointment.

Step 8: You Receive Aftercare Instructions

Your aftercare instructions are an important part of the microblading process.

You’ll be given instructions for caring for your brows while they heal.

Depending on your specific treatment, instructions may include guidance about:

  • Keeping the brows clean
  • Products to avoid
  • Exercise and excessive sweating
  • Swimming
  • Sun exposure
  • Skincare
  • Picking or scratching the area

Following your aftercare instructions can help support proper healing and pigment retention.

What Happens After Your Appointment?

The healing process is when your brows really begin to settle.

Your brows may initially look darker than expected.

Then you may experience dryness or flaking as the skin heals.

At some point, the brows can appear unexpectedly light. This temporary stage is sometimes called “ghosting.”

As healing continues, the pigment gradually becomes more visible and settles into the skin.

Your healed result—not your fresh brows—is what matters.

When Do I See My Final Microblading Results?

Your brows need time to heal before you can accurately evaluate the final result.

A follow-up appointment will be scheduled 6-8 weeks following the initial healing period to determine whether any areas need additional pigment.

A touch-up is not always necessary simply because a certain number of weeks have passed.

The decision should be based on how your brows have actually healed.

What If My Brows Are Still Dark Enough?

You may not need more pigment.

This is something I feel strongly about at Baltimore Beauties.

I don’t want to add pigment simply because you have reached a certain point on the calendar.

If your brows are still sufficiently saturated and the hairstrokes are visible, adding more pigment may not improve the result.

In fact, repeatedly layering pigment can eventually create brows that are too dark or dense.

Sometimes the best thing you can do is wait.

What If You Have Previous Permanent Makeup?

If you already have microblading, powder brows, or another form of eyebrow tattooing, tell your artist before booking.

Existing pigment can dramatically affect what can be done.

New microblading cannot simply be placed over every old brow tattoo.

If there is too much existing pigment, the brows may need to be lightened first.

In some cases, laser tattoo removal may be recommended before new permanent makeup.

That doesn’t necessarily mean your previous artist did anything wrong.

Permanent makeup changes over time, and removing old pigment can sometimes provide a better foundation for a new brow design.

How Long Does a Microblading Appointment Take?

The exact length of an appointment varies depending on the client, existing brows, skin, design, and amount of work required.

A significant portion of the appointment is dedicated to consultation and brow design.

That’s intentional.

Creating the shape and plan before beginning the tattooing process is an important part of achieving a customized result.

The Goal Isn’t Just Beautiful Fresh Brows

Fresh microblading photographs beautifully, but that’s not what I consider the most important part of the service.

I’m thinking about:

How will these brows heal?

How will this skin retain the pigment?

How will the brows look months and years from now?

Those questions matter just as much as how the brows look when you leave the studio.
